More about my approach
As a feminist practitioner I work to ensure the people closest to the issues are trusted and given the space to lead and shape solutions. In particular, I work alongside girls, young feminists and youth movements, and accompany funders and decision makers who are committed to resourcing them.
I love co-creating meaningful processes that move us closer to power-sharing, trust, accountability and joy. I invest in building relational infrastructure and meaningful collaborations between diverse actors and disciplines. I tend to work long term with my clients, as I believe supporting peoples visions and systemic change takes time and consistency.
My journey to this work
I grew up in Sydney, Australia, on Gadigal Land of the Eora Nation, and have lived in different parts of the world over the last 15 years, from Phnom Penh, Cambodia to Oaxaca, Mexico for more.
I am inspired by my mum, Vivien Johnson, who helped set up the first domestic violence refuge in Sydney and was the drummer in Australia's first all female punk band - Alias. Time with her in the Central Desert in Papunya, from age 6, sparked a deep frustration and desire to drive change, witnessing the impacts of systemic racism across Australia and the strength of First Nations Women.
Working with women's human rights defenders with UN Women in Cambodia, I met Devi Leiper O’Malley. From a bowl of Pho, to co-leading a feminist fund, in 2013 we became Co-Executive Directors of FRIDA | The Young Feminist Fund and led FRIDA for 6 years.
In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, I joined the Purposeful family, and together we built a crisis response fund, the Global Resilience Fund, moving with speed and feminist friendship. Around the same time, Devi Leiper O'Malley, Swatee Deepak and I launched Closer Than You Think, a hybrid ideas studio and consultancy collective working at the intersection of activism, philanthropy and art. Alongside advising, these spaces and teams shape my work and contribution to movements and philanthropy.
